Coaching vs. tutoring

Is coaching the same as tutoring?

No. Tutoring focuses on subject content. Coaching focuses on the skills and strategies that work across every subject — planning, organizing, studying, following through. A tutor often provides the answers. A coach builds independence.

How do I know which one my student needs?

If they don't understand the material, that's tutoring. If they understand it and it still isn't getting done, that's coaching. If both are true, you may want both.

Can we do both?

Yes. They solve different problems and don't conflict.

Who this is for

What ages do you work with?

Grades 8 through 12 for one-on-one coaching. School partnerships are flexible by agreement.

Why not younger students?

Sessions are conversation-based and ask a student to reflect, set goals, and plan a week. Most students below 8th grade aren't ready to sustain that, and I'd rather say so than take your money.

Does my student have to be struggling?

No. Some who benefit most are earning good grades on effort alone, or preparing for a college schedule with none of the structure they're used to.

Can academically strong students benefit?

Often the most. High performers frequently run on effort and anxiety rather than systems, which works until the load increases. Building the system earlier makes the harder years survivable.

Is my student a good fit?

Coaching is a conversation-based program. Students need to be able to take part in a 45-minute discussion, reflect on their week, and work toward goals they help set. If that describes your student, we can work together.

What if my student has an IEP or a 504 plan?

Coaching sits alongside the plan rather than inside it. I coordinate with teachers and the ESE team so they know what interventions we're using and how those support what's already happening. Email and a weekly 15-minute call when needed are included; attending an IEP meeting by phone or video, when my schedule allows, is $100 per meeting. I don't provide services under a plan and I'm not a substitute for specialized services.

Sessions

How long are sessions?

45 minutes for 1:1 Academic Coaching. 60 minutes for Priority Coaching.

Are sessions virtual?

Yes. All sessions are virtual by video call.

What happens in a session?

The same arc every week: check-in, review of last week's goals, a look at what's actually happening academically, identifying the real barrier, teaching a skill, planning the week, setting goals, and closing with your student owning the plan. The timing shifts depending on what they walk in with.

How quickly can we start?

After your application and consultation, usually within one to two weeks depending on calendar availability.

How do I schedule sessions?

A visible booking calendar runs first come, first served. You're encouraged to book your semester in advance around your family's schedule.

What happens over school breaks and holidays?

Sessions follow the school calendar. I'm off the weeks students are out, including December 22–26 and December 31–January 2, and available on the other days between December 19 and January 4.

Parents and students

How involved am I?

Enough to know what's happening, not enough to run it. You get a written growth note every two weeks for 1:1 coaching, and every week for Priority. The system has to belong to your student or it disappears when coaching ends.

Will you tell me what my student says?

I'll tell you what we're working on and how it's going. Session conversations stay reasonably private, because students won't be honest otherwise. Anything affecting your student's safety, I tell you immediately.

What if my student is resistant?

Common, especially with high schoolers. I recommend involving your student in the decision and framing it as support rather than punishment. Early sessions are built for rapport and trust. If resistance continues, we'll talk about it directly.

Will you communicate with my student's school or teachers?

When it helps, and with your permission. I let teachers or your student's support team know what we're working on so the strategies line up with what's already in place at school. Email and a 15-minute call during the week are included in your weekly cost. I don't act as your advocate with the district, and part of the work is your student learning to have those conversations themselves.

How do sessions work with a minor?

Cameras on, in a common area of the home where practicable. You may observe any session. Sessions are never recorded without your written consent, and all substantive communication happens on channels you can access.

Pricing and policies

What does it cost?

1:1 Academic Coaching is $160 per week. You begin with a 6-week introduction ($960), then continue in 12-week terms ($1,920). The full 18-week semester paid up front is $2,880. Priority Coaching is $1,750 per month.

Do I have to commit to a full semester up front?

No. Start with six weeks. That's long enough to build the system and see your student running it, and at week six we talk about whether to continue. Most families do, but you decide with evidence rather than on faith.

Is there an enrollment fee?

Yes — $100 holds your student's place on the calendar and is applied to your first week. So week one is $60, and every week after that is $160.

How is it billed?

Pay in full, or billed weekly to the payment method on file. All payments are processed securely online. A 3% surcharge applies to credit card payments and does not exceed our cost of acceptance; debit and prepaid cards are not surcharged.

Do you accept Step Up For Students?

Yes. I'm an approved provider. You're responsible for completing the funding organization's steps, and I'll cooperate with their process.

Why does a full term run 18 weeks?

It's a semester, and habits don't change in three sessions. A month gets you a plan. A semester gets you a plan your student actually runs. You don't commit to all of it at once — you start with six weeks.

Is there a contract?

Yes. A coaching agreement at enrollment covering scope, payment schedule, and policies. We review it together before you sign anything.

What if we need to miss a session?

Reschedule with at least 24 hours' notice at no charge. Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice, or missed without notice, are forfeited — with one courtesy exception per program for documented illness or emergency.

Can we switch between programs?

Yes. If your student's needs change in either direction, we'll talk and adjust.

How long will my student need coaching?

It depends on where they're starting. Most see meaningful progress within the semester. Many families come back the following year — not because the skills didn't hold, but because the demands change and the system needs rebuilding for what's ahead.

What if coaching isn't working?

Tell me early. If another approach or resource would serve your student better, I'll say so and help you find it.

Process and privacy

Is the consultation really free?

Yes. It's 20 minutes, there's no obligation, and if coaching isn't right for your student I'll tell you on the call.

How is my family's information handled?

Used only to prepare for our conversation and to provide services. It isn't sold or shared. See the Privacy Policy.

Do you evaluate or diagnose anything?

No. I'm an educator, not a clinician. The Snapshot is an educational reflection tool. If something suggests a professional evaluation would help, I'll say so and recommend you speak with your pediatrician or your school.

Do you guarantee results?

No. Anyone guaranteeing academic outcomes is selling something. What I commit to is a clear method, consistent work, and honesty about how it's going.

Still deciding?

The Snapshot takes 90 seconds and tells you where your student's systems actually stand.
